Gift the gift of education to children in Cambodia.
The state school system in Cambodia is beset by a lack of investment, poor facilities, limited resources and under-trained teachers. As the youth population increases and these resources are stretched more and more thinly on the ground, those with the least are left behind as the well-off can afford extra tuition.
GreaterGood.org partners with Journeys Within Our Community (JWOC) to help fill current gaps in the Cambodian educational system by offering free English, Computer and extra-curricular classes to over 850 individuals living in and around Siem Reap, Cambodia. By providing this service to Cambodian youth, JWOC gives children an opportunity to learn valuable skills in a safe and friendly environment, breaking the cycle of poverty. Despite the fact that a year's worth of textbooks costs only ten dollars and the high demand for such classes, books are in short supply.
You can help. Just $10 provides a child with enough English language textbooks to last an entire year.
Update from the Field
11-year-old Thul enrolled on JWOC’s Free Classes Program during our first term in 2018. Thul’s parents moved to Thailand for work 5 years ago, so she and her sister currently live with her Aunt. When she started in our ‘Let’s Begin’ class, she did not have any knowledge of any English, but now she can listen and understand with more confidence. Thul embodies JWOC’s motto of learning today and leading tomorrow, and she is often seen helping her classmates by translating English into Khmer or being a classroom monitor.
JWOC develops projects in Southeast Asia that reduce poverty levels, increase educational and economic opportunities, and empower recipients and supporters, inspiring ongoing social change.
